From Singapore Scotland: the Silk Road by Train

Two thousand years ago the most famous trade route, the Great Silk Road linked the the banks of the Mekong delta the Mediterranean.

Asia has emerged as a global economic force, but the lack of infrastructure stifles the development: in desperate need of new "silk roads" - by land, sea and air - to release their economic potential .

in Asia are the real weak link in the rail connectivity. Their extension has actually decreased between 1996 and 2005, for the abandonment of many lines. In one part of Cambodia, for example, where war has destroyed the railway lines 50 years ago carrying passengers and freight between Bangkok and Phnom Penh, still trains running on rails bamboo craft. But the situation is rapidly changing.
Just
Cambodia became operational the first leg of a modern rail system that, hopefully by 2015, will create a new Silk Road train uninterrupted from Singapore to Scotland. The line will be completed in 2013 and Cambodia, Nepal has already reached agreement with Vietnam the construction of a line between the two countries. The railways are returning

topical throughout Asia and this is especially visible in China, where I have just been approved new investments of around 290 billion dollars. Rail transport in addition to being more environmentally friendly, it is cheaper than road, especially in times of high cost of oil, and also stimulates investment.
