Incontrando il “doverismo” di chi si definiva un “partigiano qualunque” e concepiva la politica come moralità, esperienza altamente formativa ed educativa imprescindibile per il rinnovamento della nazione, Levi esalta l’umiltà di Parri e assimila la sua persona a quella di un mistico della democrazia avanzata, un asceta fuori posto accanto ai visi teologali e cardinalizi di De Gasperi e Togliatti: “Lo guardavo, diritto in mezzo ai due compagni di destra e di sinistra, dai visi fin troppo umani, accorti, abili, attenti, astuti, avidi di cose presenti, e mi pareva che egli fosse invece impastato della materia impalpabile del ricordo, costruito col pallido colore dei morti, con la spettrale sostanza dei morti, dei fucilati, degli impiccati, dei torturati, con le lacrime e i freddi sudori dei feriti, dei rantolanti, the distressed, the sick, orphans, in the city and the mountains [...] If you identify with the sorrows of the world, suffering in itself, taking as their own, and holiness, he was made the subject of disembodied saints ".
